Winter in Durango is in full swing.  At Atlas Specific Upper Cervical Care, we know that chances are you’ve taken the time to winterize your home and probably your car. But, have you thought to winterize your body?  Everybody prepares for winter in one way or another. There are those who are methodical. Snow tires, check. Fireplace serviced, check. Then there are others who gather the basics and hope for the best. In all that, have you ever taken the time to think about your body, and how well it will run during the winter months? Today we thought we’d take the time to point out some tips to prepare your body for the season ahead. 

Move It

Get moving, and stay that way. Exercise is key in maintaining proper blood flow. Blood flow keeps you warm. You don’t have to go for an icy walk or take up skiing. If the outdoors aren’t your thing there are plenty of indoor options. Try Pilates, or Yoga at home, join a gym if you can, or even run in place. Moving is moving – make it happen every day!


It’s easy to fall short of our water intake in the colder months. However, even in winter, it’s important to drink at least 10 glasses of water per day. This is especially true in the arid Four Corners region.  Water helps maintain your balance of body fluids. The human body is composed of about 60% water. That liquid is responsible for everything from digestion, mineral absorption, circulation, transportation of nutrients, and even temperature maintenance. Be sure to stay hydrated even in cool temps. 

A Cold Shower

It really does seem counter-intuitive, a cold shower on a cold day. There are however studies that show taking a cold shower can warm the body for the entire day. How you may ask? Well, it increases blood flow to the skin which warms you up! It also has anti-depressant effects to chase the winter blues away not to mention a whole lot of other health benefits

Layer It On 

If you’ve lived in Durango for a while, then you already know that layering your clothing is the best way to optimize your comfort. The beauty of this is in its simplicity. Every layer has a specific function. The base layer, the one against your skin manages moisture, so be sure to select natural fibers. The next layer is for insulating against the cold. Then we have the shell layer or outer layer. It shields you from the elements. Simply add or subtract layers as needed based on your activity level and changes in the weather. 

The Most Important Piece. 

We watch it happen every winter. We huddle indoors. Foods we shouldn’t eat crop up on our plates listed as “comfort foods.” Central heating circulates dry, dust-filled and germ-ridden air around us. These conditions make viruses happy. That’s why when the new girl in accounting gets a cold it’s only a matter of time before the whole office is sick.
